The southern route to the south lands was a vital link to Sauron's plans for war. Much of the movements of his armies, recruited from the south could secretly enter Mordor without the men of Gondor knowing his plans.
This way Sauron was able to keep his desighns a secret until he was ready to bring down the hammered blow against Gondor.
This was a primary route to move orcs, men, and supplies to the North.
