Lieutenant of Turgon, guardian of the inner gate of Gondolin, who in the sack of that city slew and was slain by Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs. Born during the Years of the Trees in Valinor, one of the High Lords of the Noldor, returned to Middle earth in the Fourth Age. Great friend of Glorfindel head of the House of the Golden Flower, who had been reborn and returned to Middle Earth to dwell in Rivendell, Ecthelion had dreamed of his life in Beleriand, first in Nevrast on the shores of the sea, and then later in Gondolin, King Turgons hidden city, where both he and Glorfindel and Turgon too, died when the city was attacked by the hordes of Angband, it's location given to Morgoth by Maeglin the kings nephew and traitor. Yet the Eldar were , like Men, children of Middle earth, their first home Ciuvienen. Although the Valar might judge that the Eldars true home was Aman, the love of Middle Earth ran in them all, a poignant love, since they were ageless. Ecthelion asked one thing of the Powers of the West, and returned to Middle Earth, to the Grey Havens, from whence he began his long journey across Eriador to find Imladris.

Not much is written of Ecthelion , but these passages:
..' And high and noble was ( the Noldor ) Elemmakil , greater and more lordly was Ecthelion , Lord of the Fountains, at that time Warden of the Great Gate. All in silver was he clad, and upon his shining helm was set a spike of steel pointed with a diamond; and as his esquire took his sheild it shimmered as if it were bedewed with drops of rain, that were indeed a thousand studs of crystal
( J.R.R. Tolkien, Unfinished Tales : Of Tuor and his coming to Gondolin )
Then Turgon took the counsel of Hurin and Huor and summoning all that remained of the host of Gondolin and such of Fingons people who could be gathered, he retreated towards the Pass of Sirion; and his Captains, Ecthelion and Glorfindel guarded the flanks to right and left, so that none of the enemy should pass them by
( the Silmarillion: Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad )
... of the deeds of desperate valour there done, by the cheiftans of the noble houses and their warriors, much is told ...: of the Battle of Ecthelion of the Fountain with Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, the the very square of the King, where each slew the other...
